With the Nytillverkad collection, vintage IKEA designs are back in lively new colours

What better way to celebrate a birthday than to honour some of the highlights of the time passed since? To mark 80 years, IKEA does so with Nytillverkad – a colourful revitalisation of items from its treasure trove. We walked down memory lane with Rutger Andersson and Sven Fristedt to talk about their now iconic vintage IKEA designs – and what they really think of the Nytillverkad takes on them.

To Nytillverkad and beyond – IKEA, SPACE10, and designers of tomorrow explore future with vintage designs in AI

As IKEA presents the vintage inspired Nytillverkad collection at Milan Design Week, another curious dive into its design archives takes place: an explorative workshop to reimagine the IKEA design heritage for the future with artificial intelligence, AI. We sat down with workshop hosts Georgina McDonald and Alexandra Zenner of research and design lab SPACE10 as well as IKEA Design Manager Johan Ejdemo to talk about the potential of generative AI for design and the need to look back to look forward.

IKEA explores multifunctional furniture to push limits of small space

More than half of the world’s population live in urban areas today – a share expected to grow to two thirds by 2050. For many people living in big cities, the space they can fully make their own is limited. IKEA is exploring different solutions to help people make the most of their space at home, with a range of multifunctional furniture being one of them. We spoke to Yasushi Kusume and Mauricio Affonso about what small space living looks like today and how a range of multifunctional furniture from IKEA might help make it bigger.

Creating innovative water recycling showers for the future

In the next three years, nearly two-thirds of the world's population may end up facing water shortage. With 10 per cent of global water consumption happening at home, IKEA has decided to explore and innovate around water-saving solutions. One of the innovations is a water recycling shower that enables water reuse. IKEA product development engineer Antony Smith takes us through his journey of creating this innovative shower and his learnings along the way.
